The Challenge

This project did not begin as an assigned brief. I conceived and initiated it independently while working at TV Azteca in a different role, identifying an opportunity to develop a new kind of historical drama for Mexican television.

Starting from José Manuel Villalpando’s book Amores Mexicanos, I proposed transforming the material into a cinematic television series focused on the real love stories, personal conflicts and emotional lives behind key figures of Mexico’s Independence.

From the beginning, I drove the project forward myself: I contacted the author, opened conversations around the underlying rights, developed the creative premise, brought the proposal into the network, coordinated script and production discussions, researched historical locations and continued escalating the project internally until it reached senior leadership.

The concept was intentionally different from the traditional telenovela model. The goal was to explore premium historical storytelling with stronger cinematic ambition, authentic locations and a more contemporary dramatic language.

Context & Scale

Because the initiative originated outside my formal responsibilities, the project required building momentum from zero and bringing together people and resources that were not initially assigned to it.

I coordinated conversations with the author, explored rights and adaptation possibilities, participated in script reviews, researched culturally significant locations — including potential access to Chapultepec Castle — and developed the materials needed to make the project viable as a television proposal.

The project advanced through multiple internal levels and was ultimately presented to senior leadership. Although the television version was not produced at that time, the concept continued in another format and was later produced as a theatrical production.

My Role

Original concept creator and project initiator.

I originated the idea, identified the source material, initiated contact with the author and drove the project from an independent creative proposal into a structured development initiative inside the network.

My role covered concept development, IP and rights conversations, script review, historical research, location research, production feasibility, creative treatment, executive presentations, internal pitching and cross-functional coordination.

The project required operating well beyond my formal role at the time and bringing together editorial, production, legal, creative and leadership stakeholders around an idea that had not previously been part of the network’s planned slate.

Deliverables

Original Concept · IP Development · Author Outreach · Rights Discussions · Creative Treatment · Script Review · Historical Research · Location Research · Production Feasibility · Executive Pitch Materials · Internal Presentations · Cross-functional Coordination

The television series was not produced due to politic decisions outside my control. The concept was later produced as a special theatrical production, and proved to me that I can take an idea from zero to senior leadership with no budget, no precedent, and no formal mandate.
